How your personal information is collected and used

Personal information is collected under the authority of The University of Western Ontario Act, 1982 as amended, for the purposes of keeping our alumni & donor community informed of our programs and services and for fundraising for The University of Western Ontario and the Alumni Association.  Publicly available personal information may be collected for the purpose of updating alumni records as well as for the purpose of recognizing outstanding achievement or distinguished service by alumni in University publications.

As an alumnus, your information is used in order to register you as a member of Convocation and The University of Western Ontario Alumni Association. Parents, staff, faculty supporters, and former students are eligible to become Associate Members of the Alumni Association.  For alumni, Associate Members and donors, we may use personal information to communicate with you about programs and services such as career, education, volunteer, networking, award or social programs, surveys, participation in research projects or focus groups, to provide receipts for donations and for fundraising purposes.

For our alumni, from time to time we partner with corporate affinity partners who are companies that offer alumni benefits through use of their products. The University may disclose your contact information, under strict confidentiality agreements, to mail houses or other outside agencies for the purpose of contacting you to determine your interest in such products on behalf of the affinity partners. The University receives a financial benefit through alumni use of such services.

We do not sell or otherwise publicly disclose alumni, donor or friends personal information, nor do we share alumni information directly with any of our corporate affinity partners. While we do communicate with you to market products and services provided by our affinity partners, at no time do these companies have direct access to your contact information unless you agree.

Questions and concerns about Western's approach to protecting personal information should be directed to Paul Eluchok, Associate University Secretary and Legal Advisor, Information and Privacy Office (privacy.office@uwo.ca or 519-661-2111 x84541).
